There Was a Time

There was a time when the businesses
you were welcome in
were determined by the
color of your skin.
There was a time, there was a time.

There was a time when some desperate
mother-not-ready-to-be
had to go and risk her life
in some back alley.

There was a time when certain science was
banned from the classroom,
when the old order would have preferred to keep
knowledge in a tomb.

There was a time when certain sexual preference was
treated as a disease,
when only straight lovers were free to
marry if they pleased.

There was a time when laborers worked
every day of the week
with barely time for anything else, maybe a
little food, sex and sleep.

In some regards there has been progress
made to get to today,
so let's keep moving on to create a
future in which we can say
about more things with relief, “There was a time.”
